Sleep Is a Gift
Rest, Worry, and Trusting God With Tomorrow
by Kimani Upshur, M.Ed.
Let's start with the scene nobody posts. It's late. The house is quiet. Tomorrow is already loading in your head — the test, the practice, the conversation you keep rehearsing, the group chat that won't stop buzzing. You're exhausted, and you still can't sleep. Or you could sleep, but you're scrolling instead, because stopping feels like falling behind.
This book is about that exact moment, because the Bible talks about it more directly than you'd expect. Two passages carry the whole book. The first is Psalm 127, which says something almost nobody believes at 1 a.m.: sleep is not something you earn. It's something God gives — to people He calls His beloved. The second is a scene from Mark chapter 6, where Jesus looks at His worn-out disciples — men so busy they hadn't even eaten — and His prescription is not a pep talk. It's a boat ride and a nap.
This book will never call you lazy for being tired, and it will never tell you that rest means you don't have to work. The same Bible that commands a Sabbath also honors six days of real labor. What it attacks is something else — the anxious grind that believes everything depends on you. That belief is what's actually keeping you up.
For teenagers, ages 13–18. Twelve short chapters, each ending with one concrete thing to do, reflect on, or pray — small, honest, doable tonight. God gives sleep to His beloved. If you're His, that sentence has your name on it.
Written from a Christian worldview — Scripture first.
