Real or Fake?
Testing What You Hear in a World Full of Claims
by Kimani Upshur, M.Ed.
Somebody is talking to you right now. Not out loud. Not in this room. But the claims are stacking up: the clip that says God showed someone exactly what’s about to happen to you. The AI answer that sounds so sure about what the Bible means. The app that says today’s trouble was written in your stars. The sermon clip, the deconstruction thread, the friend who forwards you something with three fire emojis and the words you need to see this.
Every one of those voices wants the same thing: your belief. And belief is not a small thing. What you believe decides what you share, what you fear, what you hope for, and — eventually — who you become.
Here is the good news nobody told you: the Bible saw your feed coming. Two thousand years before the first viral post, two of Jesus’ followers wrote instructions for people swimming in claims. The apostle John wrote, “do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” The apostle Paul wrote, “test everything; hold fast what is good.” Those two sentences are the spine of this book.
They do not say believe nothing — that’s cynicism, and it will rot your faith from the inside. They do not say believe everything — that’s gullibility, and it will hand your mind to whoever shouts loudest. They say: test. Every voice gets examined. The true ones get held tight. The false ones get set down, no matter how good they sounded.
