The Withered Hand Made Simple

by Kimani Upshur, M.Ed.

"Stretch forth thine hand" — on the Sabbath, in front of them all. In the synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus told the man, "Stretch forth thine hand," and it was restored whole, like as the other — while the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might destroy Him (Matthew 12:9-14). This Scripture-first guide walks through Matthew 12:9-14 (with Mark 3:1-6 and Luke 6:6-11) in fourteen chapters: the Sabbath setting, the man put in the midst, the watching Pharisees, the sheep in the pit, the impossible command, the wholeness of the restoration, the council against Him, the Son of Man as Lord of the Sabbath, obedience as the medicine, bringing your own withered place to Christ, the Sabbath made for man, and a closing Trinitarian prayer — plus reflection questions for every chapter. Explicitly Trinitarian: prayer to the Father, through Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior — Son of God and Son of Man — by the Holy Spirit.
